Spectacular views of Kanchenjunga in a serene environment. That, in short, is Chatakpur. The eco-village in Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, around 25 km from Darjeeling, is a world away from the hustle bustle of Mall Road. A nearby watchtower also offers a glimpse of Mount Everest and a peek at Sandakphu, the trekkers’ paradise. For those who prefer action to leisure, the Chatakpur Tiger Hill Trek offers an enchanting jungle trail. Avoid visiting from June 15 to September 15 as Senchal remains closed for monsoon.

Wake up to magical sunrises in this pretty little hamlet located in the hill opposite Darjeeling. Situated roughly 20km from Darjeeling, the place gets its name from “medicated water” as legend goes that the water of the nearby Khola river has healing properties. The village commands wide views of Kanchenjunga and Darjeeling town lights at night. Visitors can spend their time walking to Lamahatta, Takdah or through the tea gardens of Glenburn. Birdwatchers can hit the forest trail, where a variety of babblers, flowerpeckers, sunbirds and other varieties of birds can be sighted.

Take the westbound road from Ghoom and travel about 12km to reach the government-run plantation perched at around 5,000 ft in the Jorebunglow–Sukhiapokhri block. Guided strolls in the tea garden and a visit to the tea factory are on offer. Crystal-clear views of the mountain vistas are a treat for the eyes in between gentle treks.

Located 41km from Siliguri in the heart of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, it offers splendid views of the Teesta Valley. Wild boars, monkeys, mountain goats, elephants, deer, leopards and more can be sighted here besides the hornbill and a wide variety of birds. Trek to Ahal Dara viewpoint for a 360° view of the Himalayas, Raja Rani Hill if you are a wildlife enthusiast, Latkothi for birds and butterflies or Namthink Lake for tranquility.
